What to Expect During Your Danum Valley Tour?
Sample Itinerary
DAY 1 – Arrival in Lahad Datu / Danum Valley Field Centre / Night Walk
Pick up from Lahad Datu Airport or your hotel around 08:30 hrs. Begin the 2½-hour drive into the Danum Valley Conservation Area. The scenery shifts from secondary forest into the untouched 130-million-year-old rainforest.
Upon arrival, register at the reception and check in after a short briefing. Lunch is served at the dining hall. You will then meet your guide to discuss your plan for the next two days.
In the afternoon, take an easy walk around the centre. Wildlife is often active near the buildings, and you may notice red leaf monkeys, resident orangutans, hornbills, or sambar deer moving in the trees.
Return before sunset and enjoy dinner at 1900 hrs. After dinner, join a guided night walk or a 4×4 night drive to look for nocturnal wildlife, depending on weather conditions.
DAY 2 – Danum Valley Field Centre / Guided Activities
Start the morning at 06:00 hrs with a nature walk. The forest feels different at this time, and the sounds carry far through the valley.
Return for breakfast. If you want to continue exploring, there are several trails around the centre that your guide may recommend. Spend the late morning resting or simply sitting by the river before lunch.
In the afternoon, head out for another guided trek. The trails vary in length and difficulty, and your guide will help choose one that suits your pace. Return in the early evening, just in time to watch the light fade across the canopy.
After dinner, join another guided night walk to look for wildlife that only appears after dark.
DAY 3 – Danum Valley / Departure to Lahad Datu
Wake up early for a 4×4 drive to Bukit Atur to watch the sunrise over the valley, or join a final morning walk at 06:00 hrs if the weather allows.
Return for breakfast, pack up, and check out by 09:30 hrs. Depart Danum Valley and travel back to Lahad Datu for your onward journey.
DAY 1 – Arrival in Lahad Datu / Danum Valley Field Centre / Night Walk
Pick up from Lahad Datu Airport or your hotel around 08:30 hrs. Begin the 2½-hour drive into the Danum Valley Conservation Area. The road takes you from regenerating forest into untouched rainforest that has existed for more than 130 million years.
Upon arrival, register at the reception, receive a short briefing, and check in at the resthouse. Lunch is served at the dining hall. After your meal, meet your nature guide and discuss how you would like to spend your days at the field centre.
Take some time to rest before joining a mid-afternoon walk around the centre. Wildlife activity can be surprisingly close, and it is common to see red leaf monkeys, hornbills, sambar deer, or even the resident orangutan moving through the trees.
Return before sunset and enjoy dinner at 1900 hrs. After dinner, head out for a guided night walk or join a 4×4 night drive to search for nocturnal wildlife, depending on the weather.
DAY 2 – Danum Valley Field Centre / Guided Walks
Start your morning at 06:00 hrs with a nature walk. The forest ambience at this time is quiet but full of movement, and it is one of the best moments to observe wildlife.
Return for breakfast and spend some free time relaxing before lunch. If you feel like exploring more, your guide can take you on one of the shorter nearby trails.
After lunch, continue with another guided trek. Danum Valley offers several routes, and your guide will suggest one that matches your energy level. Return in the late afternoon to rest before dinner. After dinner, join another guided night walk to look for nocturnal animals.
DAY 3 – Full-Day Exploration / Night Walk
Spend another day discovering the forest with your guide. You may explore different trails, watch for birds, or take a longer route if your fitness level allows it. Your guide will decide which trails are suitable and safe.
Return to the centre in the late afternoon to refresh and rest before dinner. After dinner, you may join another guided night walk or arrange a 4×4 night safari at an additional fee.
DAY 4 – Sunrise at Bukit Atur / Departure to Lahad Datu
Wake up early for a 4×4 drive to Bukit Atur at 04:30 hrs to watch the sunrise over the valley, or choose a gentler 06:00 hrs morning walk with your guide if the weather allows it.
Return to the centre for breakfast. Pack your belongings, check out by 09:30 hrs, and depart for Lahad Datu to continue your journey.
