Deep in the interior of Sabah, Maliau Basin is one of the most remote protected rainforests in Southeast Asia. Often called the “Lost World,” it is tightly permit-controlled and largely untouched by development. There are no villages inside the basin and no casual access. People visit for the raw jungle experience, waterfalls, rivers, wildlife, and a forest that has barely been untouched. This destination is best suited for travellers who value genuine isolation, long forest treks, and wilderness over comfort or convenience.

Frequently Asked Questions for Sabah Island Packages

Maliau Basin, known as Sabah’s “Lost World,” is a remote and isolated rainforest in the south-central interior of Sabah, Malaysia, on the island of Borneo. It lies within the Tongod District, close to the Kalabakan and Tawau regions and not far from the Kalimantan (Indonesian) border. The area sits inside a distinctive saucer-shaped basin, which has helped preserve its pristine condition. Its isolation has allowed rich biodiversity and numerous waterfalls to remain largely undisturbed.

Access is intentionally limited. Entry requires advance permits, registered guides, and approved itineraries. The journey involves long overland travel on rough logging roads, followed by guided movement within the forest. This remoteness is a key reason the ecosystem remains well preserved.

The drier months, generally between March and October, are more suitable due to safer trail conditions and river levels. However, rain is possible year-round. Visits during wetter months may involve trail closures or activity adjustments for safety reasons.

A moderate to good level of fitness is recommended. Activities often include multi-hour jungle walks, uneven terrain, river crossings, and humid conditions. This is not a leisure walk in the park. It suits travellers comfortable with sustained outdoor activity.

Common activities include guided rainforest trekking, waterfall visits, canopy walk access, wildlife observation, and basic nature interpretation. The focus is on exploration and learning rather than entertainment-style activities.

It is generally not recommended for young children. The remoteness, basic facilities, long travel time, and physical demands make it more suitable for adults or older teenagers with outdoor experience.

Unlike more accessible rainforests, Maliau Basin has no surrounding settlements, minimal human impact, and strictly controlled visitor numbers. Its isolation has allowed ecosystems to develop with little disturbance, offering a true “Lost World” experience rather than a curated nature attraction.
