Wildlife tours are concentrated in Sabah’s protected forests and river systems. Common locations include Danum Valley for primary rainforest, the Kinabatangan River for riverine wildlife, Tabin Wildlife Reserve for mixed lowland forest, and Deramakot Forest Reserve, known for regulated wildlife viewing. Some itineraries also include nearby rehabilitation or conservation areas, depending on permits and availability.
Wildlife sightings vary by location. Along the Kinabatangan, proboscis monkeys, macaques, hornbills, crocodiles, and Bornean pygmy elephants are commonly seen during river cruises, with regular chances of spotting orangutans along the riverbanks. Danum Valley also supports a resident pygmy elephant population, though sightings there are less frequent and more opportunistic due to the dense primary rainforest. Tabin Wildlife Reserve offers some of the best chances to see pygmy elephants, along with wild boar and forest bird species. Sightings are never guaranteed, but tours are planned around known habitats and movement patterns.
Wildlife tours operate year-round, but March to October is generally preferred due to more stable weather and better river conditions. During these months, river levels along the Kinabatangan are suitable for cruises, and forest trails are easier to navigate. The wetter season can still offer good sightings, especially in rainforest areas, though activities may be adjusted for safety and comfort.
Most wildlife itineraries are designed for moderate fitness levels. Guided rainforest walks are usually short and paced, with regular stops for wildlife observation. River cruises involve minimal physical effort. Some optional activities, such as longer jungle walks or night walks, may require steady footing but are not strenuous. Guests can often choose to skip activities if needed.
Typical itineraries include daytime and early-morning river cruises, guided forest walks with licensed nature guides, evening or night walks, and, in some locations, night drives. Tours may also include visits to conservation or rehabilitation centres where permitted. Accommodation is usually at jungle lodges or river lodges located close to wildlife corridors to reduce travel time.
Yes, many Borneo wildlife tours are suitable for families and seniors, especially those based around river lodges and shorter walks. Itineraries can be adjusted to reduce walking intensity. First-time wildlife travellers often find these tours approachable because activities are guided, structured, and paced according to the group’s comfort level.
Wildlife tour packages focus on extended stays in conservation areas rather than quick photo stops. Days are structured around wildlife activity times, such as early mornings and late afternoons. Accommodation is selected for proximity to forests or rivers, and guides are specialised in wildlife tracking and interpretation. In contrast, general sightseeing tours prioritise landmarks, towns, and broader attractions with less time spent in protected habitats.
Malaria risk in Sabah is generally low in towns, cities, and most tourist areas. However, there can be a higher risk in deep jungle and remote rainforest areas. Dengue fever is also present in Borneo and is spread by daytime mosquitoes, especially in urban areas.
For rainforest destinations, we recommend consulting your doctor or travel clinic before your trip to determine whether anti-malarial medication is suitable for you.
To reduce the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses, travellers are advised to:
Most travellers visit Sabah safely and comfortably by following these basic precautions.

Really well planned trip and communication was great in the weeks leading up to the hike. We were given a lot of useful information upfront which really helped us plan ahead for our climb of Mt Kinabalu. We felt really taken care of from start to finish. Would highly recommend planning any Kinabalu hikes through this company!Posted on Google Shermaine AngTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. This was an experience of a lifetime. Booking this just 1.5weeks before the trip (Via Ferratta Walk the Torq), liaising on WhatsApp with Rose was a dream, who was so patient in arranging for the booking and answering all the questions before I decided to book, to processing payments and allowing for exceptions when payments did not go through. Then reaching Sabah, having Mr Ramlie pick us up in a bus from our hotel and having Mr Fikri from the company at Timphomon gate, the whole registration experience was smooth and pleasant. Our guide up and down the mountain, Dev, was patient and professional and climbing with another couple in a small group meant that as a solo traveller, I felt safe! Overall, Climbing Mt Kinabalu through Remarkable Borneo Travel & Tours was a dream and so smooth, and I would definitely book through this company again.Posted on Google Zhanna ParashchukTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. The company was responsive and attentive from first enquiry to post-climb to see how my sons were doing. They provided good information and were able to deal with the couple of outside the box requests and questions we threw at them. When my sons experienced some illness mid-hike, the company kept in touch with us, provided updates, and liaised with the crew on the mountain. Professionals.Posted on Google Othman LukTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We are highly impressed by the care and professional service provided by Remarkable Borneo.. We booked a 3D2N tour to climb Mount Kinabalu..The group consisted of people with age ranging from 16 to 82 years. Remarkable Borneo provided 2 guides to cater for the different speeds of climbing. A lot of things happened to the group. At about 3000 metres, one member suffered from altitude sickness and had to move to a lower level. One guide immediately accompanied him with his companion to a lower ground and arranged accommodation and meals at Kinabalu Park. The 82 years old was climbing at a very slow rate and took 8 hours to reach 3272.7 metres where climbers spent the night before the final assault to the summit the next day. The guide was very patient and let him climb at his own speed. During the night another member felt unwell due to certain stomach bug. The next day this member was very weak and could not move. The guide, Peter, immediately arranged for him to be carried down all the way to the base camp and accompanied him on the way down. The other guide, Luke, came up all the way from Kinabalu Park to accompany the 82 years old to move down slowly. At the end of the day everyone was happily reunited at the base camp where a private transport was awaiting to take them back to their hotel in Kota Kinabalu. We felt we were very well looked after, especially the guides Luke and Peter. We would not hesitate to recommend Remarkable Borneo to anyone.Posted on Google Lucia ChoiTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We booked Remarkable Borneo to climb Mt. Kinabalu in June 2024. We were 7 ladies total and it all went very smoothly. From the airport to retuning to the city, everything was arranged amazingly. We had 2 guides and they were very helpful and flexible. If I go back, or need to recommend, I wouldn't hesitate to mention remarkable borneo again.Posted on Google Ellen NTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
