Deramakot Forest Reserve is located in central Sabah, between Sandakan and Telupid. It lies within a large lowland rainforest area that is managed primarily for conservation and scientific research. Because it is not near major towns or tourist hubs, access is carefully regulated, which helps protect wildlife and maintain the forest’s ecological balance.
Access is moderately challenging. Visitors must travel by road using a 4WD vehicle, usually from Sandakan or Kota Kinabalu, followed by entry clearance at the forest checkpoint. Independent travel is not allowed. Entry permits, accommodation, and guiding must be arranged in advance through an authorised tour operator, which is why organised packages are required.
Deramakot can be visited year-round, but the drier months from March to October generally offer better road conditions and easier wildlife tracking. That said, wildlife sightings are possible throughout the year, and some animals, including elephants, are often seen regardless of season. Rain should always be expected, even during drier periods.
A basic to moderate level of fitness is sufficient. Activities mainly involve guided walks, forest drives, and night safaris rather than long jungle treks. Trails can be uneven and muddy, so visitors should be comfortable walking on natural terrain. The focus is observation rather than physically demanding hiking.

It may not be ideal for very young children or travellers expecting resort-style comfort or entertainment-focused experiences.
Unlike many protected areas, Deramakot is a working conservation forest with long-term sustainable management and active research programmes. Visitor numbers are strictly limited, reducing disturbance to wildlife. As a result, animal behaviour is more natural, and sightings, especially of elephants, are often more frequent and less rushed than in busier parks.
