River cruises on the Kinabatangan are safe and routinely done by thousands of tourists each year. Lodges operate under safety standards, guides know river conditions. Main precautions: wear sunscreen, hat, and grip shoes. Life jackets are available. Children should be comfortable sitting still during cruises.
Proboscis monkeys, crocodiles, kingfishers, eagles, hornbills, macaques, and monitor lizards are commonly spotted along the Kinabatangan River. Orangutans and pygmy elephants are sometimes seen, while clouded leopards and sun bears are extremely rare sightings. Wildlife sightings depend on season, weather, river conditions, time of day, and luck.
