One of Borneo’s most protected rainforests, 140 million years old.
Danum Valley Conservation Area (DVCA) spans 438 square kilometres of intact lowland rainforest. It’s one of the world’s oldest continuous rainforests and home to more wildlife diversity than many entire countries.
The forest is habitat for proboscis monkeys, Bornean orangutans, pygmy elephants, gibbons, clouded leopards, and over 340 bird species. Visitors stay either at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge (more comfortable, mid-range pricing) or the Danum Valley Field Centre (research station, budget-friendly). Both locations provide access to the same forest and similar guided activities: morning walks, evening walks, night safaris, canopy walkways, and river activities.
Borneo Rainforest Lodge (BRL) is a mid-range eco-lodge located within Danum Valley. It offers comfortable accommodation with private chalets, river views, and lodge-style dining. The property has a restaurant, bar area, and outdoor spaces overlooking the rainforest.
Guests at BRL enjoy the same guided activities and forest access as the Field Centre, but with upgraded comfort and amenities. Ideal for visitors who want a balance between adventure and comfort. Staff are familiar with international guests and can accommodate various dietary needs.

Honest answers to what people actually ask
The road to Danum Valley is unsealed and quite rustic, which is exactly what helps keep the rainforest so well preserved.
It is a gravel and ungraded route, and a 4WD vehicle is required. Along the way, you can expect typical off-road conditions such as washboard surfaces, small creek crossings, and some steeper sections. The journey usually takes around 2.5 hours, and can take a little longer depending on weather and road conditions.
The good part is that this is a well-travelled route for experienced drivers. Our drivers are very familiar with every section and handle the journey regularly, so guests can simply sit back and enjoy the transition into one of Sabah’s most pristine rainforest environments.
Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed in Danum Valley. Orangutans and Bornean pygmy elephants do inhabit the area, but encounters are generally rare and depend on luck, timing, and environmental conditions.
Other wildlife such as gibbons, hornbills, and various forest species may be seen, but sightings vary from day to day. The best way to approach the experience is to focus on the rainforest ecosystem as a whole, with any wildlife encounters treated as a bonus rather than the main expectation.
The walks are slow-paced observation walks, not vigorous hikes. If you can walk 2–3 hours at a leisurely pace with stops, you can manage. Pace is flexible and guides adjust for slower walkers.
March to October has slightly lower rainfall and better wildlife spotting chances. Peak bookings: April, July, August (school holidays). Book 8–12 weeks in advance during peak months. Accommodation fills quickly.
Pack light, practical clothing suited to tropical jungle conditions.
Essentials: sturdy waterproof hiking boots, light rain jacket, long-sleeved shirt and trousers, hat, headlamp (critical for early morning and night walks), leech socks (rainy months), DEET insect repellent, sunscreen, refillable water bottle, binoculars, and camera.
Avoid heavy fabrics and denim. Leave unnecessary gadgets and formal clothing behind.
Borneo Rainforest Lodge: More comfortable private chalets, river views, lodge-style dining, bar facilities, mid-to-premium pricing, feels like an eco-resort.
Danum Valley Conservation Centre: Basic dormitory or simple resthouse rooms, research station atmosphere, cafeteria-style dining, budget-to-mid-range pricing, feels more like an expedition.
Both have the same rainforest access and guided activities. Choose based on comfort preference and budget.
Limited. Both lodges have internet but speed is often slow (satellite-based). Mobile phone reception is minimal to non-existent in most of Danum Valley. Consider this a digital detox benefit. Bring a book, journal, or camera. Let your family know you’ll have limited communication during your stay.
Malaria risk in Sabah towns is low, but in deep rainforest areas like Danum Valley, risk is slightly elevated. Consult your doctor or travel clinic before your trip. they can advise based on your health and risk tolerance. Basic mosquito prevention (DEET repellent, long sleeves, netting) is always recommended regardless.
