"When we were exploring visit to Borneo we contacted couple of travel agencies, some took long time to respond, some were full but all of them were less or not flexible to changes. Then we found Rose, super helpful, super communicative and solution minded. We were looking to combine 2 different tours into one but skip some of the activities such as the Sandakan sanctuary. We got what we needed, 5 days Kinabatangan and Danum Valley. Everything went as planned, on time transport and great guides. 5 out 5 stars."

What Danum Valley Offers

Danum Valley Conservation Area

Danum Valley Conservation Area (DVCA) spans 438 square kilometres of intact lowland rainforest. It’s one of the world’s oldest continuous rainforests and home to more wildlife diversity than many entire countries.

The forest is habitat for proboscis monkeys, Bornean orangutans, pygmy elephants, gibbons, clouded leopards, and over 340 bird species. Visitors stay either at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge (more comfortable, mid-range pricing) or the Danum Valley Field Centre (research station, budget-friendly). Both locations provide access to the same forest and similar guided activities: morning walks, evening walks, night safaris, canopy walkways, and river activities.

Borneo Rainforest Lodge

Borneo Rainforest Lodge (BRL) is a mid-range eco-lodge located within Danum Valley. It offers comfortable accommodation with private chalets, river views, and lodge-style dining. The property has a restaurant, bar area, and outdoor spaces overlooking the rainforest.

Guests at BRL enjoy the same guided activities and forest access as the Field Centre, but with upgraded comfort and amenities. Ideal for visitors who want a balance between adventure and comfort. Staff are familiar with international guests and can accommodate various dietary needs.

Honest answers to what people actually ask

Common questions

What is the road condition like to Danum Valley?

The road to Danum Valley is unsealed and quite rustic, which is exactly what helps keep the rainforest so well preserved.

It is a gravel and ungraded route, and a 4WD vehicle is required. Along the way, you can expect typical off-road conditions such as washboard surfaces, small creek crossings, and some steeper sections. The journey usually takes around 2.5 hours, and can take a little longer depending on weather and road conditions.

The good part is that this is a well-travelled route for experienced drivers. Our drivers are very familiar with every section and handle the journey regularly, so guests can simply sit back and enjoy the transition into one of Sabah’s most pristine rainforest environments.

Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed in Danum Valley. Orangutans and Bornean pygmy elephants do inhabit the area, but encounters are generally rare and depend on luck, timing, and environmental conditions.

Other wildlife such as gibbons, hornbills, and various forest species may be seen, but sightings vary from day to day. The best way to approach the experience is to focus on the rainforest ecosystem as a whole, with any wildlife encounters treated as a bonus rather than the main expectation.

The walks are slow-paced observation walks, not vigorous hikes. If you can walk 2–3 hours at a leisurely pace with stops, you can manage. Pace is flexible and guides adjust for slower walkers.

March to October has slightly lower rainfall and better wildlife spotting chances. Peak bookings: April, July, August (school holidays). Book 8–12 weeks in advance during peak months. Accommodation fills quickly.

What should I pack for Danum Valley?

Pack light, practical clothing suited to tropical jungle conditions.

Essentials: sturdy waterproof hiking boots, light rain jacket, long-sleeved shirt and trousers, hat, headlamp (critical for early morning and night walks), leech socks (rainy months), DEET insect repellent, sunscreen, refillable water bottle, binoculars, and camera.

Avoid heavy fabrics and denim. Leave unnecessary gadgets and formal clothing behind.

Borneo Rainforest Lodge: More comfortable private chalets, river views, lodge-style dining, bar facilities, mid-to-premium pricing, feels like an eco-resort.

Danum Valley Conservation Centre: Basic dormitory or simple resthouse rooms, research station atmosphere, cafeteria-style dining, budget-to-mid-range pricing, feels more like an expedition.

Both have the same rainforest access and guided activities. Choose based on comfort preference and budget.

Limited. Both lodges have internet but speed is often slow (satellite-based). Mobile phone reception is minimal to non-existent in most of Danum Valley. Consider this a digital detox benefit. Bring a book, journal, or camera. Let your family know you’ll have limited communication during your stay.

Malaria risk in Sabah towns is low, but in deep rainforest areas like Danum Valley, risk is slightly elevated. Consult your doctor or travel clinic before your trip. they can advise based on your health and risk tolerance. Basic mosquito prevention (DEET repellent, long sleeves, netting) is always recommended regardless.

"We had an amazing experience at the Danum Valley research center organized by Remarkable Borneo (3D2N package). During our stay, we had the luxury of being the only guests. Our private guide, Jusman guided us days and night throughout the jungle and thaught us many things about the rainforest biodiversity and history. His spotting skills and knowledge of the surrounding jungle allowed us to spot Orang Outan, Gibbons, red leaf monkeys as well as many birds, and even a Slow Loris during our night walk! The rooms are clean and have everything that you need. The staff is very kind, they will not hesitate to call you if they spot wildlife in the area, also, the food was delicious! A huge thanks to Rose from Remarkable Borneo that provided us with an imense assistance during all steps of our journey, answering all our (many) questions and organizing inland transfers in Borneo. We highly recommend!"

We are highly impressed by the care and professional service provided by Remarkable Borneo.. We booked a 3D2N tour to climb Mount Kinabalu..The group consisted of people with age ranging from 16 to 82 years. Remarkable Borneo provided 2 guides to cater for the different speeds of climbing. A lot of things happened to the group. At about 3000 metres, one member suffered from altitude sickness and had to move to a lower level. One guide immediately accompanied him with his companion to a lower ground and arranged accommodation and meals at Kinabalu Park. The 82 years old was climbing at a very slow rate and took 8 hours to reach 3272.7 metres where climbers spent the night before the final assault to the summit the next day. The guide was very patient and let him climb at his own speed. During the night another member felt unwell due to certain stomach bug. The next day this member was very weak and could not move. The guide, Peter, immediately arranged for him to be carried down all the way to the base camp and accompanied him on the way down. The other guide, Luke, came up all the way from Kinabalu Park to accompany the 82 years old to move down slowly. At the end of the day everyone was happily reunited at the base camp where a private transport was awaiting to take them back to their hotel in Kota Kinabalu. We felt we were very well looked after, especially the guides Luke and Peter. We would not hesitate to recommend Remarkable Borneo to anyone.

We booked Remarkable Borneo to climb Mt. Kinabalu in June 2024. We were 7 ladies total and it all went very smoothly. From the airport to retuning to the city, everything was arranged amazingly. We had 2 guides and they were very helpful and flexible.
If I go back, or need to recommend, I wouldn't hesitate to mention remarkable borneo again.

Booked a 3D2N tour to climb Mount Kinabalu. The service is top notch, very clear explanations and also a very detailed description of what you will be doing during the day. Everything arranged down to the last detail, from pick-up at your hotel to drop-off at your next accommodation.

Tour guide Didi is also a legend, a very chill guy who let us set the pace and helped us where necessary.

We did the Mount Kinabalu (Walk the torque) track with Remarkable Borneo. The mountain was amazing and the trip was very unique. Transport and accommodation were good.

However, I am only able to give 3 starts, as the food at the Pendant Hut (accommodation where we stayed) was really awful. I understand that all food need to be carried up by porters, but still the food that you get just before you start the hike (supper) and second breakfast was the worst breakfast we ever had (egg which was almost green/black as it was very over cooked, chemical-tasting pink sausage, old dry white bread..). As you pay such a high price for the tour (highest price I ever payed for a hiking tour) this should be much much better. I still don’t understand why the price for the tour is so excessively high (3000MYR = €600)..

Lastly, the guide could have been more informative about the region, flora and fauna. He didn’t tell us anything unfortunately.

We booked 2D1N for Mt. Kinabalu climb with Remarkable Borneo and we had a really amazing time! All staffs are very nice and supportive through out the whole process. They respond very quickly to inquiries and attentive to our needs. No issues in the reservation at all. The driver who picked us up was right on the schedule and friendly.

Our mountain guide was professional and patient. He was highly supportive and ask if we still doing okay during the whole climb. He helped me a lot and encouraged us to reach the summit eventually (and took great photos!).

10/10 would recommend ☺️

Our trip to KK was not planned at length due to work, but thankfully the agency has a variety of options ranging from daily trips to large projects like the Kinabalu summit. Although we regret not opting for the summit climb due to our limited planning time, the daily trips we chose were rewarding and well-suited to our availability. The agents were incredibly supportive, providing assistance from our initial inquiries about the trips right through to their execution.

As KK offers the dual experience of sun-soaked maritime adventures and treks through lush mountainous terrain, I think the agency played these cards well and provided both experiences smoothly, on schedule, and followed up on the agreed arrangements. They outsourced the maritime activities to another company, and I believe RemarkableBorneo chose wisely to partner with a professional and equally helpful agency. Overall, our experience with RemarkableBorneo was very positive, and we wish them continued success. Cheers.
